You pay for several streaming services, yet every movie night starts the same way: opening app after app, typing the same title into search box after search box, and still not knowing whether it's streamable at all. Movie Owl exists to end that ritual.
Movie Owl is a free search tool for streaming in Sweden. Type a title, an actor or a director once, and it looks across the catalogs of every service it tracks at the same time — showing you what exists, how good it is (real IMDb ratings), and exactly which of your services carries it. One click sends you to that service with the title already searched.
Netflix, Disney+, Max, Prime Video, Viaplay, Apple TV, SkyShowtime, Crunchyroll, BritBox, hayu, Pluto TV, SVT Play, TV4 Play, Tele2 Play and Cineasterna — more than 30,000 movies and series, refreshed every night.
That is a list, deliberately, rather than a promise of everything. Sweden has a long tail of smaller services — arthouse and documentary streaming among them — that Movie Owl doesn't follow yet. When a title plays only there, Movie Owl will tell you it isn't streaming. That's the edge of what the owl watches, not a verdict on the film.
Movie Owl is not a streaming service. It hosts no video, sells no subscriptions and streams nothing itself. Think of it as the catalog on the counter of a very well-stocked video store: it tells you where to watch, then hands you over to the service you already pay for. To actually watch anything, you need your own subscription to that service, with two happy exceptions: SVT Play is free for everyone, and Cineasterna — the public libraries' service — is free with a library card, though each library buys its own selection, so which films you can borrow depends on yours.
Two questions, answered honestly
Everything in Movie Owl serves one of two questions. "Where can I stream this?" — search any title and get a straight answer, including the uncomfortable ones: if a film left Netflix last week, the app says so instead of showing a stale logo; if a service only rents a title rather than including it in your subscription, it's clearly marked rent instead of masquerading as included; and if something isn't streamable in Sweden at all, Movie Owl says that too — along with where you could rent or buy it instead of leaving you with an empty page.
"What should we watch tonight?" — filter by genre, year, IMDb score, what's newly arrived on your services, or whether it won an Oscar or an Emmy; browse by actor or director, or read the catalog from the other side in Roll credits, where the people behind it are ranked by award, rating and volume; switch to Owl's picks, where what you have seen and rated is turned into an Owl score and the catalog is re-ranked around your taste; or press Surprise me and let the house deal you a card.
Do I need an account?
No. Movie Owl works fully without one — your settings, watchlist and seen-list are kept in your browser. An account (free) adds portability:

Where the data comes from
Titles, posters and streaming availability come from TMDB, with availability data powered by JustWatch. Ratings information courtesy of IMDb (https://www.imdb.com), used with permission, from their published non-commercial datasets. Academy Award and Primetime Emmy wins come from Wikidata, available under CC0. The catalog re-syncs itself every night, so arrivals and departures are at most a day old. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB, and Movie Owl is not affiliated with any streaming service.
The numbers themselves — how big each catalogue is, what arrived and what left — are on Swedish streaming in numbers, updated nightly with the catalog.
Movie Owl doesn't follow you around the internet — no ad networks, no third-party trackers, and nothing is ever shared or sold. Like any website it keeps simple usage notes (a search happened, a title was opened) to see what's worth improving, but those notes carry no identity that outlives your visit. The address a request came from is kept for a month at most, only so misbehaving visitors can be shown the door.
And no cookie banner — because there's nothing to consent to. Movie Owl sets no cookies until you sign in, and then exactly one, whose whole job is keeping you signed in. Your watchlist and settings live in your own browser unless you make an account. Fonts are served from movieowl.tv itself, and trailers load through YouTube's no-cookie player only when you press play. Nothing on your device exists for tracking, so there is nothing to ask permission for.

Yes, entirely. It's a search tool, not a subscription. The streaming services it points to have their own prices, but Movie Owl adds nothing on top.
Can I watch movies on Movie Owl?
No — Movie Owl streams nothing. It finds where a movie or series is available and links you to that service. You watch there, with your own subscription (or free on SVT Play).
Which country does it cover?
Sweden. All availability answers are for the Swedish catalogs of each service. More regions are on the roadmap.
Can I read the site in Swedish?
Yes — the whole site, this page and the Guide included. Use the language switch in the account menu, top right (Sign in, or your name), in Settings, or go straight to movieowl.tv/sv. Language and country are separate settings here: the Swedish pages still answer for the Swedish catalog, and the English ones always did.
Why does a title show "rent" next to a service I subscribe to?
Some services run a rental store alongside their subscription. A rent tag means that service charges per title for it — it is not included in the subscription price. Movie Owl keeps the two strictly apart so a service logo always means "included".
How fresh is the catalog?
It refreshes every night. New arrivals get a NEW badge for a week, and titles that leave a service stop being listed as streamable the day after they disappear.
How do the personalized picks work?
Mark a few titles as seen and rate them, then open Owl’s picks in the top bar. It ranks everything on your services by the people, themes and genres of what you liked — and by what viewers with similar taste enjoyed — and tells you why each title is there. Your filters still apply, so you can narrow your own feed. Save something to your watchlist that isn't streaming anywhere yet and Movie Owl keeps an eye on it: the day it lands on one of your services it wears the NEW badge and tops your watchlist's Ready tonight group. And every high rating quietly recruits a scout — when something new arrives featuring the director or cast of a title you scored highly, you hear about it the moment it lands. It all happens inside Movie Owl; nothing is shared with anyone.
The house rules
Short version: you're welcome here, it's free, and it comes as it is. Movie Owl is made with care but without a support desk behind it, so the fair deal is this — use it as much as you like, and expect exactly what you see.
- As is, and free. No subscription, no account required, no ads. Equally: no warranty, no uptime promise, no guarantee any particular feature sticks around. If the site is down on a Friday evening, that's genuinely bad luck rather than a broken contract.
- Trust it, but check it. The catalog comes from TMDB and refreshes nightly, and it is right the overwhelming majority of the time. It can still be a day behind, or wrong about a licence that changed this morning. The streaming service itself is always the final word — please don't subscribe to anything on Movie Owl's say-so alone.
- We're a signpost, not a cinema. Movie Owl hosts no video and isn't affiliated with, endorsed by, or speaking for any streaming service. Follow a link and you're on their turf, under their terms and their prices.
- Your stuff is yours. Your watchlist, ratings and settings belong to you. Without an account they never leave your browser; with one, they sync so you can use Movie Owl on the sofa and on the train. Delete your account and they go with it.
- Be kind to the owl. Browse, search, share links, use it daily — all welcome. Please don't scrape it wholesale, hammer it automatically, or resell the data; it's one small server and heavy machinery spoils it for everyone.
- Things will change. Features get added, occasionally removed, and this page gets rewritten when they do. Nothing here is a promise about tomorrow.
None of that is meant to sound guarded. Movie Owl is built to be genuinely useful — the first thing you open when nobody can agree on what to watch — and it's meant to stay that way and keep getting better. The plain terms above exist so nothing is oversold, not because anyone is keeping you at arm's length: everything here is offered in the spirit of a good recommendation, given freely, meant sincerely, and worth double-checking before you spend money on it.
